A notorious former police officer, whose job during Korea’s military regime was to torture dissidents, has become a Christian pastor.

Lee Keun-ahn, 70, who was dubbed “torture engineer” for his various inhumane torture skills to extract answers from political dissidents and college students during the 1980s, was ordained as a pastor Thursday, JoongAng Ilbo reported Saturday.

“I feel like I were born again. I will live my life, fixing my eyes only on Jesus on the cross,” he told reporters after the ceremony, adding he plans to devote the rest of his life to prison mission.

One of his personal victims, Kim Geun-tae, later became a health minister during the Roh Moo-hyun administration.

When his hey day ended with the onset of democracy in South Korea, Lee went into hiding for 12 years before finally turning himself in to the police.

He was released in Novemer 2006 after serving his seven-year term.

While on the run, Lee became a Christian. He enrolled in a correspondence seminary school at prison.
